Eugene City Council recently convened a work session to discuss a new neighborhood planning process that will cover the “University District,” which city staff have defined as including the South University, Fairmount, and West University neighborhoods. Click the button for a video of that session (minute 12:25 to minute 44:00).
State law, and Eugene’s implementation of those laws, has significantly limited the ability to tailor land use plans to a neighborhood’s unique characteristics; the city’s proposed process is intended to assess neighborhood needs in light of this new context. The effort is intended to include a range of city departments (planning, parking, parks, etc.) and take input from a range of neighborhood stakeholders (neighbors, schools, businesses, etc.). The city is referring to the new process as a pilot; both Bethel and our neighborhood will be part of the pilot at the same time. The image below shows the timeline proposal displayed at the work session. The SUNA board will communicate more information to the neighborhood as soon as we have it.
