To Support Livability
In response to concerns about community livability, the SUNA board recently met with police officers, including UOPD Captain Don Morris, EPD Captain Sherri Meisel, EPD Lieutenant Chuck Salsbury, and EPD Officer and Community Engagement Specialist Steven Chambers.
SUNA’s goal of encouraging respect, safety, and livability for all our neighbors is shared by police, and the following plans were discussed:
Procedures to follow:
- Neighbors are encouraged to exchange contact information.
- If residents plan on hosting a gathering, please let neighbors know—and lower the volume by 10:00 p.m.
- If a party gets out of control in terms of safety, drinking, or noise, the police non-emergency number can be called (541-682-5111). The caller will be asked for the party address and the name of the complainant. Even if a neighbor doesn’t press charges, information is recorded.
- EPD will respond to calls as soon as possible. Complaints are forwarded to the University, and any UO students involved will get a letter from UO. Education is the goal, though repeat offenses may incur citations under the Social Host Ordinance.
- Even if the EPD doesn’t arrive, the report is filed and students will get a letter from UO. Repeat addresses may be visited by UOPD during the day for a conversation about being a good neighbor.
- Party Patrols will be initiated on priority nights to discourage an increase in unruly parties.
