Olympic Trials 2021 – Parking Proposal

TrackTownUSA is hosting the Olympic Trials June 18-27 and they want to partner with the City and SUNA on a parking solution specifically for athletes and coaches. To increase safety, athletes will not share vehicles or use demand response services (Uber, etc), resulting in a significant number of single-occupant vehicles.

Previously, parking for events such as the Trials and the Prefontaine Classic has overwhelmed campus neighborhoods—generating many complaints about parking and ticketing. The proposal below aims to address these issues.

(It is still uncertain whether spectators will be in attendance. If it is determined safe, spectator shuttles will be provided from SEHS and Autzen; the parking proposal does not include offering event permits to spectators.)

Current proposal:

  • Under consideration is a permit-required area in SUNA (south side of 18th to southside of 23rd, Hilyard to Agate) to provide on-street parking exclusively for credentialed participants, such as athletes, coaches, and officials, in effect 7:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m. for 10 days.
  • Only existing SUNA Zone A permits, residents’ guest permits, and event permits sold by the City of Eugene through TrackTownUSA will allow parking in Zone A.
  • The number of event permits sold (approximately 300-400) will ensure residents & guests have parking availability.
  • Existing ‘Zone A’ signage would be covered and replaced by event-permit related information.
  • City parking will increase patrols. Increased fines will be levied if a non-permitted car is parked on the street, blocks a driveway, etc.

Permit funds raised by the temporary parking district will cover the costs of signage. Any revenue above the “hard costs” is earmarked for upcoming projects at our University Park.

This is a proposal. Input will be invited from SUNA residents. The City will create an administrative order for the temporary parking district for the 2021 Olympic Trials, which includes postcard notifications to residents and a comment period.
