Winter Housing for the Homeless
To provide housing for three families during the winter, three 100 square foot pallet shelters were temporarily installed in FCC’s office parking lot in mid-December.
Lane County provided the pallets for a winter with extremely limited emergency shelter options, including a drastic reduction in capacity at the Egan Warming Centers and Eugene Mission during the Covid Pandemic.
The shelters do not have plumbing but will provide heat through installed electric heaters – costs which the church will cover.
Lane County will also provide a Port-a-Potty, a washing station, and meals through a third party provider. The plan is to have these shelters in place to offer three families shelter from the weather from January 1st until April.
Katharine Ryan of the Human Services Division of the Lane County Health & Human Services states: “Families staying at the site will be screened to ensure they are able to follow the rules, be good neighbors and work well with others on site. Program staff will check in regularly on site and residents will have access to comprehensive housing navigation services to connect them with other social services and work to develop and execute a plan for moving into permanent housing.”
