Building Demolition
The demolition is set to begin in the first two weeks of December. (Click this link for the design of the new Edison building.)
Work on the new Edison Elementary School includes repurposing the cupolas from the roof of the 1926 building. One of the cupolas will be used to house the Edison Little Free Library on the east side of the property.
Special neighborhood thanks to Hyland Construction (Mike’s on the ladder) and 4J for working to reuse Edison’s 1926 name plate, commemorating the oldest school building in Eugene. If it can be removed intact, it will be installed on the east side of the new building.
Keepsake Brick Distribution
Neighbor Vernon Campbell volunteered his time to remove and clean several hundred Edison bricks for community distribution. People with a sentimental attachment to the school are invited to pick up a keepsake brick as a memento.
The distribution plan is as follows — please follow it carefully for your safety and to avoid interfering with the construction crew:
Self-serve pick up hours
- Monday, November 30 and Tuesday, December 1 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Location
- Enter from the Emerald Street gate only.
- Bricks are on a pallet on the north side of the construction trailer.
- Come in directly to get your brick and then leave; please do not wander the site or ask questions of the construction crew.
One brick per person while supplies last
- Please honor this request! Your brick is a keepsake — they were carefully removed by a volunteer for you to have as a memento, not for your next garden project!
- If there are remaining bricks after this initial distribution, the distribution will be extended from Wednesday through Friday for people to get a second brick.
Thank you to 4J, Hyland Construction, and Vernon Campbell for making this brick distribution possible.
