South University Neighborhood began as a farming plot purchased and divided into residential lots in 1909. At that time is was simply called Gross’ Addition. After 15 years of trying to sell the plot unsuccessfully the City Of Eugene decided to build Edison Elementary School in 1926. Suddenly the plots started selling fast and property values rose with the sales. Having a neighborhood school preceded the desire to live in the South University Neighborhood. Multiple generations of neighbors have been educated at this excellent neighborhood school. It continues to attract families who purchase single family homes nearby so that their kids can walk to school. They enjoy the close knit community spirit Edison creates.
Ninety two years after Edison Elementary School was first constructed, it needs our help if it is to continue to do it’s work keeping SUNA a livable, walkable city family friendly neighborhood. Edison School is on the November 6, 2018 Bond measure because it is in danger of collapse in the predicted subduction zone earthquake incident. For our essential neighborhood school to continue to exist and be healthy and thriving in SUNA, the bond must pass.
